Arpapaya Fm

Period:
Devonian

Age Interval:
Eifelian (D1-2 ar), S2

Province:
North Tajik

Type Locality and Naming

It was identified by D. A. Starshinny and V. L. Klishenich in 1971 on the northern slopes of the Turkestan Ridge.

Synonym: Arpapaat suite, Arpapayat suite, Арпапаятская свита

Reference section:

Lithology and Thickness

Clayey limestone. The Arpapaat suite consists of red, purple, green, and yellow-gray clay slates, claystones, sandstones, and gravelites with layers of small gravel conglomerates, limestones, marls, and dolomites. To the east of the territory (on the right bank of the Aksu River), the Arpapaat suite contains a layer of diorite porphyrites. The thickness of the Arpapaat suite is 200-500 m.

The correlated Arpapayatsky suite, арпапаятской свите also apparently includes gravels, conglomerates, and sandstones with limestone lenses underlying the Jivetsky dolomites on the right bank of the Isfara River in the Maidan area.

Lithology Pattern:
Clayey limestone

Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

It lies with basal conglomerates and angular unconformity on the rocks of the Kyzykin Fm

Upper contact

It is covered by dolomites of the Devonian period.

Regional extent

In the described area, it is spread in the interfluve of the Altikol-Dakatsu. This complex allows correlation of the Arpapayatsky suite with the Prague and Zlichovsky deposits of Czechoslovakia.

Fossils

The Arpapaat suite is characterized by a large complex of petrifactions, which includes Favosites nikiforovae Chekh., F. b jensis Sok., F. regularissimus Yanet, F. gregalis Porî., F. alpina Hör, Squameofavosites aff. bohemiens Pocta.Lyrielasma aff. halliaform (Soshk.), Eridophyllum ex gr. asiaticum Ivania, Aulacophyllum ex g. sulcatum (d'Orb), Atrypa devonica Wels, A. comata Barr.

The base of the deposits of Arpapayatsky suite is not exposed, and their observed thickness does not exceed several dozen meters. Here, the Favosites ex gr. interstinctus Regn. and Oculipora? sp. were found.

Age

Eifelian. It is mentioned that Kyzokinskaya suite of Pragian is overlain discordantly by the Arpapaya Fm, hence put this at Eifelian for schematic stratigraphic column representation.
